What Happens at Your First Skin Consultation

By Aubry Tan, RN, Cosmetic Injector and Co-Founder of CLA.

Keypoints:

  • A consultation is a conversation, not a sales pitch — it starts with your skin, your history and your goals, not a treatment menu.
  • You’ll leave with a plan, not a pushed decision — we explain your options and give you time to decide, at your own pace.
  • First consultations at CLA are obligation-free — book yours here and see our full range of treatments before you go.

If you’ve never had a cosmetic consultation before, the not-knowing is often the most stressful part. In short: your first consultation at Coastal Luxe Aesthetics is a 30–45 minute, obligation-free conversation where we assess your skin, talk through your goals, and outline your options — no treatment happens on the day unless you specifically ask for it.

Before you arrive

You don’t need to prepare much, but it helps to:

  • Come with a clean face, free of heavy makeup, so we can see your skin properly.
  • Bring a list of any medications, supplements or skin conditions — this affects what we can safely recommend.
  • Think about what’s actually bothering you, in your own words, rather than a specific treatment name. “My skin looks tired” is just as useful to us as “I think I need filler.”

What actually happens in the room

  1. A skin and facial assessment. We look at your skin type, texture, hydration and any areas of concern under good lighting.
  2. A conversation about your goals. We ask what you want to look and feel like — subtle refinement and dramatic change need very different plans.
  3. A review of your medical history. Some medications, skin conditions or recent treatments elsewhere can affect what’s safe to do next.
  4. Treatment options, explained plainly. We’ll walk through what’s suitable, what isn’t, and why — including treatments we don’t think you need.
  5. A written plan and quote. You leave with a clear next step, not a vague “let’s see.”

What we won't do

  • Pressure you into booking on the spot.
  • Recommend a treatment just because you asked for it, if it isn’t the right fit.
  • Skip the medical history questions, even if you’ve had the treatment before elsewhere.

If you're coming in for something specific

Some clients book a consultation already knowing exactly what they want — a specific treatment they’ve researched, or something they’ve had done before elsewhere. That’s completely fine, and the consultation still matters: it confirms the treatment is still the right fit for your current skin, checks nothing has changed in your medical history, and gives us a chance to flag anything we’d approach differently. We’d rather have that conversation upfront than adjust course partway through a treatment.

Other clients come in with a general concern rather than a specific treatment in mind — tired-looking skin, an area they feel self-conscious about, or simply wanting to look as good as they feel. This is arguably the more common starting point, and it’s exactly what the consultation process is designed to work through with you.

Questions worth asking us

Don’t be shy about asking your own questions during the consultation — a good clinic expects them:

  • What product will you be using, and is it TGA-approved?
  • What’s the realistic downtime for this treatment?
  • What would you recommend if I only wanted one treatment, not several?
  • What does aftercare look like, and is it included?

Frequently asked questions

Usually 30–45 minutes, depending on how many concerns you'd like to discuss.

Only if you specifically ask for it and it's appropriate on the day. Most clients prefer time to think before booking treatment.

No — come as you normally would, just with minimal makeup so we can properly assess your skin.

That's completely normal, and honestly the easiest kind of consultation for us — describe what's bothering you and we'll talk through the options.
